Many of our lessons involve working with 1 and 2 point perspective. The students are learning to use horizon lines and vanishing points to draw landscapes, room interiors, and cityscapes. We may have some budding architects in our mist!

In this lesson using the fifth element of art, the older classes are making a paper scene using varying degrees of one color. These are called monochromatic color schemes and are used often in art.

Easter Projects

Many of the art classes are making a string art cross to give to their families for Easter. The younger students are learning to draw bunnies using simple geometric shapes. I hope you have a blessed Easter and a relaxing spring break.

Wayne Thiebaud Cakes

The children are learning about the work of Thiebaud. His art is a celebration of his happy life. He especially enjoys painting desserts. The classes are learning how to draw and color ellipses in order create a beautiful cake in the style of this fun and upbeat artist.

Color Wheels

The younger classes are learning about the color wheel. Did you know that by using just the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) you can mix almost any other color? We will be painting our own color wheels and using our new skills to paint a "masterpiece".

Shape to Form

We are learning how to make simple geometric shapes look like 3-D forms in fourth grade. Imaginative robots and other cool objects will be created with just the touch of our pencils and erasers! This lesson will help us to draw better by thinking about and using light sources.

Mandalas

The fifth and sixth grade students are learning about mandalas. Mandalas are circular designs often found in churchs and other religious settings. Many cultures have used them throughout history to symbolize their belief systems.

Kokopelli

Many of our classes are learning about Kokopelli, the famous Native American flute player. Did you know that his image is among some of the oldest art found in the United States? It is often seen on the rocks and cliffs of the Southwest. This happy figure is a symbol of good luck.

Shoescapes

The 5th and 6th grade classes are drawing "shoescapes." Using contour line, the students are drawing their shoe in a landscape setting in order to achieve distance. Foreground and background is emphasized.

Body Proportion

Many of our art classes will be learning about the proportions of the human body. Some will be making 3-D skeletons out of a clay medium. The younger classes will be drawing their versions as a Halloween character. Did you know that a typical adult body is eight heads tall?

Halloween Haunted Houses

The students in sixth grade are building haunted houses using foam core as the base. They will then paint and embellish their 3-D artworks using ghoulish colors and creepy decorations. We will view some of the distinctive architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright as inspiration. In third grade we are making haunted house collages. Collage is a French term which means to paste or glue on. Many famous artists have used this technique. We are using lots of interesting paper for this project.

Portfolios

Several classes are learning about portfolios. Many professions use them, but to artists they are very important. They protect and organize artwork. We are making and decorating our own in class.

U.S.A. Calendar Contest

The fifth and sixth grades are busy drawing their reasons for loving our country. Some will be entered in the annual calendar contest sponsored by the Kenton Co. Attorney's office. Many are using famous people and national landmarks as the subject matter for their drawings.
